What kind of investor are you?

10 plain questions about your finances, your goals and how comfortable you are when values fall. You get one of five profiles, from Conservative to Aggressive, and an honest read-back of what drove it.

What is my risk profile?

Your risk profile is how much rise and fall in value a sum of money can take, given your circumstances and your temperament. This questionnaire reads it back from your own answers.

  • About 3 minutes, one question at a time. You can go back and change any answer.
  • No sign-up. Nothing is sent anywhere unless you choose to send it at the end.
  • Your answers live only in this page's address, so a refresh keeps your place and a saved link reopens your result.
  • The result is a profile, not a portfolio: it names no products, schemes or amounts.

What it looks at

  • Your finances 4 questions

Your age, your monthly commitments, your provision for goals and how steady your income is.

  • Your goals 2 questions

What you expect from this money and when you need it.

  • Your comfort with risk 4 questions

The mix you prefer, when you would sell in a fall, and how you feel about safe choices and bad decisions.

How the result is worked out

Each answer carries between 2 and 10 points, and every question counts the same. Your points are added up, from 20 to 100, and the total falls into one of five equal bands: 20 to 35 Conservative, 36 to 51 Moderately Conservative, 52 to 67 Moderate, 68 to 83 Moderately Aggressive, 84 to 100 Aggressive.

A mutual fund distributor is expected to understand an investor's risk profile before suggesting any scheme. This is that first step, open to anyone. If you later become a client, the PDF of your answers can be the first entry in that record.

Common questions

What is a risk profile?

A short description of how much rise and fall in value you can afford, and can live with, for a particular sum of money. It depends on your finances, what you want from the money and when you need it, and how comfortable you are when values fall.

How is my profile worked out?

Each of the 10 questions has five answers, worth 10, 8, 6, 4 or 2 points, from the most risk-bearing to the least. Every question counts the same.

Is this investment advice?

No. It is an educational assessment of your own answers. It doesn't name any product, scheme or amount, and it isn't a recommendation. A suitable plan needs a conversation about your full circumstances.

Is anything I enter stored or sent?

No. Your answers stay in this page's address and in your browser. This browser remembers only your last profile label (such as Moderate) so the home page can show it, and Retake clears it. Nothing is sent unless you fill in the optional form at the end.

Can my risk profile change?

Yes. A new job, a loan paid off, a child, or simply living through a fall can all change it. It is worth retaking whenever your circumstances change.
